Despite the unforeseen changes in our world today, one thing we know with certainty is that the local church is God’s Plan ‘A’ for building His Kingdom on the earth. And there is no Plan ‘B’. ‘People Builders Church’ is part of His plan.

You’ll find the vision and culture of People Builders is not complex or difficult to understand. There is a vision, a structure and a plan, but it’s simple.

It’s about taking the focus off ourselves and placing it on others. It’s about building people up and not pulling people down. It’s about living for a cause greater than just ourselves.

At People Builders we remain passionate about two things – loving God and loving people. We are convinced that every individual person is important to God and that ‘People Builders’ exists to build people up, to facilitate ‘Christ like’ transformation in people’s lives and to be a catalyst for positive change in our local community and beyond.

In response to a compelling God given dream (confirmed in many different ways) founding pastors Jeff & Karen Atherton and their two children (plus a few supportive friends) launched this new church in the nightclub basement of the Port Macquarie RSL in 2001. The church was called Eternity Christian Church and was birthed after 10 days of prayer and the full covering of Acts Global Churches. (Previously – Apostolic Church Aust)

Growth and momentum followed, and the church became established in the Port Macquarie community, expanding its operations with Youth, Children & Creative ministries plus Cert IV training and small groups.

In 2004 in response to another vision, referred to as “The epidemic of loneliness vision” we opened a Community Care Centre in the CBD, and have continued assistance to this day, with a new facility opening in mid 2020.

In 2009 there was a refocusing of vision with a name change to People Builders Church and today we see ongoing open doors of opportunity, for the flowing out of the life changing message of Gods Grace through Jesus Christ, to 1000s of people right across our city and beyond.

The Mission & Vision of People Builders is simply expressed in the words “building lives - transforming communities”.

People Builders can only see this accomplished by God’s Grace and the power of the love of Christ expressed in and through our lives toward others. Jesus Himself is the ultimate People Builder.

Building people’s lives – is simply & clearly expressed in our church name “People Builders” …. it’s who we are and what we do.

Notice in the logo we took the dot off the ‘i’ and placed it on the ‘u’ because you are more important that I am.

With Christ as our example we model from what He demonstrated, that others are more important than just ourselves.

  • It’s about taking the focus off ourselves and placing it on others.
  • It’s about building people up, not pulling people down.
  • It’s about living for a cause greater than just ourselves.

We see all facets of ministry at PB being a ‘catalyst for transformation’ in our local community and beyond.

PB is part of a missional movement of churches (Acts Global Churches) with a vision to impact locally, nationally and internationally.

The transforming impact of the Good News of God’s grace is both personal & spiritual, transforming each person from the inside out.

As people’s lives are supernaturally transformed by Gods “amazing grace” they receive fresh hope and new purpose. That transformation touches their homes, families, friends, schools and workplaces, both in this community and beyond, for generations to come.

At PB our purpose is simply expressed with these two words – Making Disciples. This is the commission Jesus gave to us in Matt 28:19. “go … and make disciples …”

What does ‘making disciples’ look like?

  • Description: Assisting people along a spiritual continuum towards Christ and spiritual maturity.
  • Definition: Growing in our love for God & growing in our love for people (spiritual maturity).
  • Strategy: Disciple people ‘into Christ’ & disciple people ‘in Christ‘.
  • At People Builders Church discipleship is very important.
It begins before people accept Jesus as their Lord and Saviour and then continues on through every stage of spiritual growth across the course of one’s life.
  • This happens in the life of our church through — church services, connect groups, equipping courses, youth & children’s programs, mentoring, prayer, bible reading and through our brother/sister relationships with one another.

The fourth area we define is our passion – expressed by the word “Restoration”.

  • Restoration is the passion of the church.
  • The gospel is about restoring people back into relationship with God, back into a life of worship & prayer, of healing & wholeness, of faith & hope and purpose & destiny. Gods original design for us all.
  • We didn’t start this process of restoration and we cannot finish it. It’s Christ who took the initiative and it’s Christ who will complete it.
  • We find that God progressively encourages, equips and empowers us to live a life of fruitfulness. This is the work of the Holy Spirit. Galatians 5:22,23 “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience ………….”
  • So the church is not just about meetings, worship songs, preaching and friendships. The church is passionate about the restoration of peoples lives.

3 Focuses

At People Builders our approach to church life is to keep things simple by focussing on doing just 3 things really well:

  1. Others focused Outreach
  2. Passionate & effective Discipleship
  3. Preparing for & expecting great Church meetings (in person and online)

PEOPLE BUILDERS is not just a name for a church or an organisation – it’s also a description of “who we are” ..it’s a description of “what we do”.

WHAT WE DO is determined by WHO WE ARE …on the inside.

The ‘culture’ of People Builders begins its formation by what’s developing inside us (who we are); which then flows out through our words, behaviour and actions (what we do) – and so culture is formed. Culture is an outward expression of our DNA.

God builds His Kingdom relationally: This statement is key to our church culture, because at PB we prioritise ‘personal’ relationships with God and with others over functional relationships built around ministry activities.

So . . . Who is a People Builder?

To answer this question we have developed 5 markers that simply describe the passions and priorities that are aspired to by those who partner together and call themselves People Builders.

These 5 distinctives make up what we call the… PROFILE OF A PEOPLE BUILDER

People Builders are people who agree with these priorities for life:

  • Centred in Christ
  • Built on the Word
  • Empowered by the Spirit
  • Focused on the lost
  • Destined for eternity

People Builders also prioritise & remain consistent on 2 things – Loving God & Loving people.

If we have the 1st focus (loving God) in right priority the second one (loving people) will happen naturally – and super naturally. Together this actually becomes a well-balanced definition of spiritual maturity – “growing in our love for God and growing in our love for people”.

COME  /  ON  /  MOVE  /  UP  /   GIVE  /  OUT

To keep it simple and easy to remember we’ve chosen just 6 short words to describe our values. We could list many more words but these 6 bring clarity to what we see as important.

COME its about . . . all people being wel-come.

A friendly inviting atmosphere that’s not exclusive, but inclusive. A place to belong that places value on every person. Where strangers become friends and friends become family.

When people come into this ‘House’ it’s like coming home. Family, food, life & love. Welcome! …. Just as Christ has said to us…COME.

ON its about . . . people being switched on – not turned off.

An atmosphere that is engaging & full of life. Introducing people to a switched on God. Assisting people to get back on track. Seeing first hand how new life ‘in Christ’ will flick the on switch in people’s spirit & illuminate a whole new hope-filled future. Come on ……

MOVE its about . . . movement.

Encouraging each person to be moving forward in life. Learning the unforced rhythms of His grace (Matt 11:29 MSG). Not leaving people “stuck in the mud” but instead helping people discover their Holy Spirit empowered “get-up and go”. As a church we value progress and productivity and encourage an active and healthy lifestyle – spirit, soul & body… Move it baby ……

UP its about . . . a heavenly perspective.

An uplifting environment that ‘builds up’ others in the midst of a ‘pull down’ world. An authentic culture of faith that focuses people on Jesus & elevates their perspective on life beyond just this world. UP – speaks of an atmosphere where pessimism and negativity give way to optimism and right believing, where people learn to walk in freedom with Eternity in their sights.

GIVE its about . . . generosity.

Living with a grace to be generous & see beyond our own needs. Being the type of people who learn to walk in God’s supernatural provision and have more than enough to sow into the lives of others. To align our financial world with Gods economy and learn what it means to invest in Gods Kingdom plan for the local church, through tithes (10%) and offerings. Live to Give.

OUT its about . . . an outward looking focus.

Not inward looking, but outward looking. Taking our eyes off ourselves & allowing the Great Commandment and the Great Commission (Mark 12:30,31) to motivate us, to not only look up, but to reach out & bring the Good News to others. To not only love God, but to be looking out for the needs of others and to be actively engaged in serving people.

Below are a number of Bible passages that have helped establish and confirm our focus and direction.

Matt 16:18 NLT

Now I say to you that you are Peter, and upon this  rock I will build my Church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.

Eph 4:11,12 NLT

Now these are gifts Christ gave to the Church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do His work and build up the church, the body of Christ.

Isaiah 58:12 MSG

You’ll use the old rubble of past lives to build anew, rebuild the foundations from out of your past. You’ll be known as those who can fix anything, restore old ruins, rebuild and renovate, make the community liveable again.

Isaiah 58:12 NLT

some of you will rebuild the deserted ruins of your cities. Then you will be known as a rebuilder of walls and a restorer of homes.

Isaiah 61:4 NLT

They will rebuild the ancient ruins, repairing cities destroyed long ago. They will revive ..

Zechariah 6:12 – 15 NLT

Yes, he will build the Temple of the Lord. ……..People will come from distant lands to rebuild the Temple of the Lord.

John 15:5 NKJV

”I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in Him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.”

Matthew 22:37,38 NLT

love the Lord your God………and love your neighbour.

Matt 28:19 NLT

Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations…

Matt 11:29 MSG

Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace.
